West Cumbria Managing Radioactive Waste Safely Partnership

English Lakes Hotels

Osprey was the communications advisor to the West Cumbria Managing Radioactive Waste Safely Partnership. The Partnership carried out three extensive rounds of communications and engagement over a three year period, culminating in a major public consultation.

Our work included strategic communications advice, media relations, an advertising campaign, organising public exhibition stands, newsletters, producing a DVD and producing a live ‘Question Time’ style webcast - see here.

The Partnership was shortlisted for 3 awards for its communications and engagement work at the 2012 CIPR NW awards - for best consumer relations campaign, best integrated communications campaign and best External Publication.

Working with members of the Public and Stakeholder Engagement sub group, we carried out a wide range of communications activity.

As well as media relations, we produced a number of newsletters which were sent to all households in West Cumbria and an Overview of the Partnership's consultation document. The Overview was included in the consultation pack, together with the full consultation document and the DVD, which was shortlisted by the CIPR for the best External Publications in the NW. It was also sent to homes in West Cumbria.

We also produced advertorials which were published in all the Cumbrian papers.

We organised exhibition stands at major events in West Cumbria, in town centres and at one of the area's largest shopping centres.

The Partnership was also shortlisted for an award for the best community relations campaign in the 2011 Chartered Institute of Public Relations PRide Awards in the North West after the second wave of public and stakeholder engagement work in 2011.

Our work also included providing communications training to help members of the Partnership to communicate the complicated issues to the media and to members of the public.

Cllr Tim Knowles, cabinet member for the environment on Cumbria County Council, said: "My experience of Osprey's training was exceptionally good. It was professional, insightful and exceptionally well tailored to address the issues I was facing. The experience and understanding of the Osprey team can only be described as first class."

We produced two short films for the Partnership, which were filmed and edited by Fluid Productions. You can see the most recent film here.
